The short answer

Disability bathroom grants in Wicklow: the short answer

Wicklow County Council pays the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability, up to €40,000, and the Mobility Aids Grant, up to €8,000, towards an accessible bathroom. The work must not start until the council approves it. Bathroom Renovations Wicklow is not a council and doesn't award grants.

The grants

Three grants, one application form

GrantMost it paysIncomeBathroom work
Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability€40,000Up to 100% under €37,500, tapering to 30% near €75,000; nothing over itAccessible shower, downstairs toilet or shower room
Mobility Aids Grant€8,000Up to €37,500Level-access shower, grab rails
Housing Aid for Older People€10,700Up to €75,000, aged 66 or overEssential repairs, not a bathroom upgrade

One form covers all three. The council decides which one fits.

Priorities

Who gets funded first

  1. Priority one: terminally ill, or mainly dependent on family or a carer, or the work would let someone leave hospital or residential care.
  2. Priority two: mobile, but needs help to reach the bathroom, toilet or bedroom.
  3. Priority three: independent now, adapting the home for later.

The council also fast-tracks delayed discharges: someone fit to leave hospital who can't until the house is adapted.

Your income

How much you'll get

The full grant under €37,500 of household income, nothing over €75,000, and a sliding scale between. The council's own example: an income of €45,000 gets 75% of the cost.

The rules

The rules people miss

  • A doctor's certificate is needed for the Mobility Aids and Housing Adaptation grants.
  • An occupational therapist's report is needed for a Housing Adaptation Grant. The council usually sends its own OT; a private OT's fee, up to €300, comes out of the grant.
  • You find and pay the contractor. The grant is paid to you after the work is done and inspected.
  • Grants don't include VAT: you claim the VAT on disability work back from Revenue, on the form the council gives you.
  • Every contractor needs tax clearance, and so do you if the grant paid in a year is over €10,000.
  • Tenants of a private landlord or an approved housing body can apply too.
